Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina, United States. Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day city of Trinity in 1838, the school moved to Durham in 1892. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment and the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father, Washington Duke. The campus spans over 8,600 acres (3,500 hectares) on three contiguous sub-campuses in Durham, and a marine lab in Beaufort.The West Campus—designed largely by architect Julian Abele, an African American architect who graduated first in his class at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design—incorporates Gothic architecture with the 210-foot (64-meter) Duke Chapel at the campus' center and highest point of elevation, is adjacent to the Medical Center. East Campus, 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) away, home to all first-years, contains Georgian-style architecture. The university administers two concurrent schools in Asia, Duke–NUS Medical School in Singapore (established in 2005) and Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China (established in 2013) Duke's undergraduate admissions are among the most selective in the United States, with an overall acceptance rate of 6.2% for the class of 2026. Duke spends more than $1 billion per year on research, making it one of the ten largest research universities in the United States. More than a dozen faculty regularly appear on annual lists of the world's most-cited researchers. As of 2019, 15 Nobel laureates and 3 Turing Award winners have been affiliated with the university. Duke alumni also include 50 Rhodes Scholars, the third highest number of Churchill Scholars of any university (behind Princeton and Harvard). Duke is the alma mater of one president of the United States (Richard Nixon) and 14 living billionaires.

(대학원학생 중 동양계 학생은 8.7%.) 교수 학생의 비율은 9:1로, 이 지역의 다른 어느 대학보다 좋은 교육 여건을 갖고 있다. 듀크대학에는 학부 문리대와 함께 대학원, 법대, 신학대, 의대, 간호대, 환경 지구과학대, 공대, 경영대 등 대학원 과정의 전문직 학교들이 있다. 연구중심 학과중에 특히 생의학 공학이 전국 최고 수준으로 꼽히며, 생태학, 생물학, 신경과학 등도 상위 그룹에 속해있다. 가까이 있는 의학 센터에 힘입어 생화학과 약리학도 매우 좋은 평가를 받는 학과들로 꼽힌다. 문리대에서는 정치학과, 경제학과, 공공정책학과 등이 전국 최상위권에 포함된다. 또한 영문학과 낭만주의 연구는 전국의 관심을 끌고 학생들의 인기도 높은 학과들이다. 듀크대는 학문뿐 아니라 스포츠로도 많이 알려져 있다. 골프, 테니스, 라크로스 등 다양한 스포츠 프로그램이 있으며 농구팀은 거의 매년 미국 대학 리그 우승후보로 거론된다.
